Dietary fiber serves many health benefits for the body. The only way to get the fiber that you need is to make sure you eat even more fiber than you think you need! Fiber can be found in many healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains. What can dietary fiber do for you? Here are some of the health benefits of dietary fiber:

  • Lowers your risk for developing diabetes
  • Lowers your risk for developing heart disease
  • Relieves and prevents constipation

By increasing your amount of dietary fiber you will be increasing those health benefits everyday. It is not as hard as you think to get the required amount of fiber you need each day. Everybody has individual needs for the amount of dietary fiber that they need, you can always search online for calculators to help you determine the amount of dietary fiber that your body needs, or check with your doctor.

There are two main types of fiber:

  1. Soluble Fiber: This type of fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel substance. This fiber is very beneficial to help you lower your cholesterol levels and also lower glucose levels. This fiber is found in apples, citrus fruits, barley, carrots, beans and oats.
  2. Insoluble Fiber: This type of fiber is very beneficial to those who suffer from chronic constipation. This fiber helps to increase the flowing of materials through the digestive system. Good sources of this type of fiber include whole-wheat flour, nuts, vegetables and wheat bran.

Try to get a wide variety of fiber every day to ensure your body is getting what it needs. Eating a diet high in fiber is also great way for weight loss. High fiber foods typically take longer to chew and this tricks your body to think it is actually not as hungry as you think. There are many benefits of dietary fiber, and getting enough fiber in your diet can help keep you healthy.
