It is the second pariksha (examination), which has been mentioned in ashth vidh pariksha mentioned in Yoga ratnakar. It is a type of examination by which bodies’ physiology can easily be known. The disturbance in body can easily be judge by simple observation of the colour, quantity, consistency or density, odor, deposits etc. of your urine. Of the ancient ayurvedic physician and herbal physician of this era, there are some experts, who can diagnose the disease from which you are suffering by just examining the urine. Ayurvedic practitioners who have gained mastery over observing the urine method of examination can even tell the kind of meal you had the previous day.
Urine sample
For submitting the urine for urine examination, a patient should wake up one and a half hour before the sun rise (brahma-muhurata) and passes his urine in a clean glass vessel. The sample of urine collected should always be tested at sunrise.
The collection is made in such a way that the first portion of the stream of the urine should be rejected and the middle portion only should be collected in a bottle for examination. By these two precautions, any discharge coming out of the urethral canal is avoided and the deposit that collects at the bottom of the vessel may be taken as that which is sedimented from the urine coming out of the bladder. The physical examination of the urine is then conducted by noting
- The quantity
- Colour
- Consistency
- Odor
- Density
- Character of deposits
- Surface tension
