Quantity
The amount of urine passed by a normal adult man per day is four anjali i.e. four handful according to ayurveda. This comes out to near about 50 ozs per day. In regard to the number of urine passed per day, it is said to be six times in a normal healthy human. But it may vary from individual to individual. Dosha effect is also seen on the amount of urine excretion. The predominance of kapha produces more amount of urine. Pitta dosha lets the production of urine less compared to that of kapha. A person with vata constituency either more or less according as the vata is in combination with kapha or pitta respectively. In sannipaata, the urine is very scanty and it appears at very long intervals or not all.
A normal healthy individual does not wake up from sleep at night until early morning to pass the urine. It may also vary from person to person but it should not exceed two times in night also. Generally the quantity of urine passed during the day is four times more than the quantity of urine of the in night. If the quantity of urine passed in night exceeds the amount passed in daytime then some abnormality is suspected. Increased secretion of urine usually occurs after taking food or drink and after exposure to cold (kapha) and conversely the quantity of urine is decreased when the body is exposed to heat, when there is more sweat and the food is less (pitta). Urine increases in nephritis, in some forms of Prahmeh (a set of 20 urine related disorders) and in yoshapasmaar (hysteria). Urine is less in acute nephritis (pitta) in heart and liver related ailments, jwar (fever), atisaar (diarrhoea), chardi (vomiting) and cerebral irritation. Passing of too much in fever and in prameha are signs of bad prognosis. The deep red colour of urine in meharog synonym to prameha roga (urine related disorder) and it is yellow fever. If in meha roga and in fever too much quantity of urine is passed the disease is incurable.
