Prahmeh
Though prameha is included in diseases in ayurveda but it is important to mention about it here, as it is a set of twenty diseases that are related to urinary disorder. Prameha occurs due to vitiation of all the three doshas i.e. it is sannipaata. But it is still classified into three categories vata pitta and kapha. It is classified on the basis of dominance of the dosha. Ten dosha belong to kapha, six belongs to pitta dosha and four belongs to vata dosha.
Kapha prameha
All these ten disease that are mentioned below have vitiated all the three doshas but it is classified into kapha dosha due its dominance.
These are
- Udaka meha (watery meha)
- Ikshu meha (sugarcane meha)
- Saandra meha (thick meha-pishta meha)
- Saandra prasaad meha (semi thick and clear meha sura meha)
- Sukla meha (white meha- pista meha)
- Sukra meha (sperm like meha)
- Seeta meha (cold meha)
- Sihata meha (sand like meha)
- Sanair meha (slow meha)
- Aalaala meha (saliva like meha)
In these kapha meha, the watery portion of the body (sharir kledah) mixes itself with kapha and fatty portions and then transforms itself into urine, which possesses one of the following ten properties of kapha.
- Shwet (whiteness)
- Sheet (cold)
- Moorta (bulkiness)
- Picchill (stickiness)
- Achcha (clearness)
- Snigdh (smoothness)
- Guru (heaviness)
- Prasaada (shining)
- Madhur (sweetness)
- Sandra manda (thickness)
The property, which the meha possesses, gives their respective names. These ten are curable because the treatment given through food, habits and drugs, which have properties opposite to kapha, check and remove the cause of the disease.
Disease of urinary tract that cause difficulty in micturation, pain in lower part of abdomen and deposit like gravel in the urinary bladder, in the passage and in the kidneys are some of them included in meha ragas, some in mutra kricha (dysurea) and some in ashmari (calculi) and so on.
Pitta Prahmeh
This type of meha is caused due to all the three doshas but in this pitta is the most dominant of all. These are of six types. These are.
- Kshara meha (alkaline meha)
- Kaal meha (black meha)
- Neela meha (blue meha)
- Rakta meha (blood meha)
- Mangishta meha (red meha)
- Haridra meha (yellow meha)
These urine acquires the following properties
- Kshara (alkaline)
- Aamla (acid)
- Lavan (salt)
- Katu (pungent)
- Visra (foul smell)
- Ushan (hot)
All these six-pitta meha can be relived but its cure is very difficult, as the treatment given to counteract pitta and medas that are dominantly affected in these diseases contraindicate each other. As an example, madhur (sweet) and sheet (cold) things counteract pitta dosha, but simultaneously it increases fat or meda. Thus it is difficult to cure. But they may be kept in check by cautious and prolonged treatment by proper diet, habits and drugs.
Vata Prahmeh
It is caused by all the three doshas but the most dominant of all in this category is vata dosha. Food, habit and medication, as a rule increases vata when consumed by the person in excess in which already vata is dominant. . This vitiated vata thus combines with vasa (muscle), majja (bone marrow), laseka (the fluid that lies between the layers of the skin) and oja (the final essence of human metabolism). This leads to the origination of four types of vata prameha.
These are:-
- Vasa meha (muscle fat meha)
- Majja meha (marrow meha)
- Asthi meha (elephant meha)
- Madhu meha (honey meha; diabetes mellitus)
The treatment in this type of prameha is use less and is considered to be incurable. As the tissues involved are more precious in vata prameha and the treatment is contradictory and tending to increase the very cause of disease, these four-vata prameha are considered to be incurable.
The treatment for vata prameha requires the use of snigdh (oils) and madhur (sweet) preparations increases vata, majja, laseka and oja respectively that are already over predominant in the respective vata Prahmeh.
