Consistency and density
Normal urine is quite watery in texture. But urine contains many other constituents like sugars, bile, pus cells, deposits of calcium, and it may be thicker. In ayurveda various methods have been mentioned by which the density of the urine can be determined. These are certain oil tests or by gently heating the urine in slow fire or a sand bath and by estimating the solids in urine.
In a person who is suffering from kapha related disorder the solids appear in the urine exceeds one tenth of the total quantity. In pitta related disorder the solid particle lies between one tenth and one fifth of the total amount. In the vata related disorder the solids excess the one fifth of the total quantity. The total amount off solids in urine of a healthy individual is about one twentieth, which comes out in 50 ozs of urine passed in one day. The modern medicine the density of the urine is estimated by the urinameter. The specific gravity of urine varies from 1000 to 1030.
In a normal individual the specific gravity of urine is in direct proportion to the amount of urea present. Abundant urine of low specific gravity is suggestive either of diabetes incipidus or of chronic renal disease. Abundant urine of high specific gravity is characteristic of diabetes mellitus. In the latter condition the specific gravity may reach 1075. In most cases it is between 1040 to 1045. In diabetes incipidus, on the other hand, the specific gravity may fall nearly to that of distilled water. The presence of albumin in the urine does not materially affect its specific gravity.
If the urine of a person is constantly of oil, honey or alcohol is likely to die soon as mentioned in ayurvedic texts.
