Wine Versus Beer

The question many people are asked is, “Are wine and beer good for us?” well the answer to that question is, “Yes”. Read on to find out how or why.

It is believed that the fermentation of wild grapes first began over 7000 years ago in the mountainous region of Iran. The fruit initially used for the making of wine was called Vitis vinifera. The ancient civilizations discovered that the yeast on the skins of ripening grape turned the natural sugar into alcohol, which had a very pleasant effect on the mind when consumed. It was by the year 2500 BC that the Egyptians learnt to stomp the juice out of the grapes in large wooden vats with their feet and ferment the juice to produce wine in large quantities – later they learnt to cultivate grapes in large vineyards. This began to be known as viticulture and finally spread to the north from Egypt to Italy and France.

Beer began in much the same manner but instead of being brewed out of grape fruit it is made from ‘wart’ the water in which barley is boiled and then fermented with a seed of a flower called ‘Hops’. In the beginning it was found that people who used to drink wine were more educated, richer and well spoken that people who used to drink wine. This made people think that people who consumed wine had greater health benefit than beer drinkers. This misconception has, however, been put to rest by the American Heart Association a long time ago.

There is no difference between the two. Beer and wine have the same effect on a person’s health. If taken in moderation, which is two pegs a day for men and one for women, will work wonders for overall health and the heart in particular. One must remember of course that too much of a good thing is also bad.
