The need for a trainer
June 2, 2009
While having a trainer to help you lose weight certainly can help with staying focused and dealing with the emotions that can interfere with losing weight, you can do it yourself if you have the motivation.
One reason some of us feel we need a trainer is so that we will do the exercises correctly, thereby avoiding injury. None of us wants to hurt ourselves in the name of getting fit, but if you are, smart and take the time to do the exercises as instructed you will be able to minimize the risk of injury.
Stretching is an extremely important part of an exercise routine. Too many of us neglect to stretch properly, believing it isn’t an essential part of a workout, focusing instead on burning calories or building strength.
But stretching properly before and after a workout, is important to keep you from injuring yourself.
You should also avoid exercising too much too soon. While you may think that if you exercise for excessively long periods, you will drop a lot of weight every week, you need to remember that if you don’t hire a trainer, you will be responsible for yourself; you need to make sure you don’t injure yourself by overdoing it.
If you haven’t exercised in a while, you shouldn’t begin a vigorous exercise program immediately. Instead, start slowly, perhaps walking for 15 to 30 minutes each day, working up to walking for an hour, then doing extensive aerobic exercise or jogging.
Having the correct shoes is essential for a great workout. If you buy shoes that aren’t properly suited to your chosen exercise, you may develop foot or knee pain. Paying for a more expensive type of shoes is worth it in the end.
While a lot of strength-training exercises may seem easy, it’s still important to do them with proper form. Find pictures online, and then look at yourself doing the movements using a mirror. You can also have a friend check to make sure you are doing them right.
If you lift weights, never bench-press when you’re by yourself. The bar can become too heavy and you could become trapped.
One of the most important things to remember while exercising at home is to stop if you feel pain. If an exercise causes you pain, you’re most likely not doing it right. It’s best to slow down. You can always try again at a later time.
