The Energy Drinks: How Safe are They?
October 7, 2009
Energy drinks are advertised everywhere. They are so popular that anyone can buy them in places ranging from a convenience shop to a drug store. The claims associated with the drinks sometimes sound ridiculous, and at other times they sound really good.
As a result, they are sold in millions of numbers without anyone taking time to think about the fact that they have some bad effects also.
Remember that not all energy drinks are the same. Many of their ingredients are same; however, average customers would not know one drink from another if they do not know what they need.
Most of the drinks have caffeine, which is not a very healthy thing to consume on a regular basis. It hikes your blood pressure, among other problems commonly associated with the consumption of caffeine.
Beyond the caffeine, there are other ingredients that people do not even know about. People are gradually coming to know about some of these ingredients, which have their own side effects when mixed with medicines inside your body.
Guarana and taurine are two such ingredients that, when mixed with other drugs, can have dangerous side effects. The latter can prove toxic, if it is found in excessive amount in the body.
Even more dangerous is the knowledge that many ingredients found in energy drinks can potentially be harmful if they are mixed with other things we consume in our day-to-day lives. This lack of knowledge is very dangerous.
The safety of the ingredients present in these “health” drinks has not yet been verified. We cannot, for sure, say if these ingredients are good or not, but ignorance is our biggest enemy in such a case.
If you are really fond of downing these drinks, you are offering yourself up for a round of Russian Roulette every time you consume one. Of course, you cannot predict beforehand what combination is potentially harmful to your body.
This danger is particularly alarming for those who consume huge quantities of these energy drinks every day. It is also very disquieting to know that there have been some deaths reported from caffeine overdose from the health drinks. People should consume these drinks in moderation until the FDA proclaims they are safe.
