The Dangers Of Diabetes Is Not Completely Understood

In a recent survey conducted by the survey company Harris International in August this year revealed that people from all walks of life do not fully understand the dangers of diabetes. People surveyed were more afraid of contracting cancer than they were of contracting diabetes – despite the fact that each of the two diseases are contracted by 10 million people each year in America alone.

The fears of diabetes way down on their list of dreaded diseases with Cancer topping the list and Heart disease coming in a close second. The fears pf the people were absolutely unrealistic with many of them fearing plane crashes and shark bites – blissfully unaware of the risks they run when it cones to diabetes.

49 percent of the people fear cancer more than they do any other disease. Only 6 percent feared – or actually were aware – of the risks of diabetes. This is despite 10 percent of the population being diagnosed with some level of blood sugar problems during their lives and being explained the dangers of the disease manifesting itself.

Among the people polled 4 percent feared shark attacks more than anything else, 13 percent feared snake bites and 8 percent were fearful of spider attacks. When asked about diabetes they were at a loss for words and never knew anything about the disease. They were under the impression that diabetes is a disease one is born with – genetic they believe.  So if they don’t have it they will not get it. Nothing is further from the truth. Diabetes is a very real danger with repercussions that range from kidney failure, heart failure and many more complications that include joint and nerve pains.

Medical experts around the world are of the unanimous opinion that if one leads a healthy lifestyle with ample exercise they can avoid diabetes – the best way advice.
