Right Clothing to Match Your Body
November 5, 2009
We all have different shapes. That’s a fact that has to be to taken into account when choosing our clothing. Price alone should not dictate choice of a garment.
An upscale garment, beautifully made, that just doesn’t fit right will not look good on you. The following considerations will help you understand body types and therefore, make better choices.
Are You Bulky?
Then darker colors are for you. This is not an ironclad rule but it works most of the time Forget horizontal stripes entirely. You want vertical stripes. When looking at a person wearing vertically striped garments our eyes tend to look top to bottom, not side to side. This projects a slimmer image.
Forget checkered patterns too. This is especially true for the trousers.
Go for single vented jackets. You are trying not to draw attention to your backside, so avoid double vents. Depending on the style, you can even consider having no vent at all. A local tailor can modify an existing jacket inexpensively.
Get clothes that fit. If it’s too tight, it will only draw attention to your flaws. On the other hand, clothes that are too loose tend to make you look larger.
Be aware of extreme color contrasts. Depending on whether or not the occasion allows for a suit, it is better than the jacket/pants combination.
Pick V-necks or crew necks, not turtlenecks, which draw the eye to your neck instead of away from it. Of the two, the V is better because it suggests that you have a longer neck.
If you choose prints, go with less, not more. Large, bright or busy printed shirts draw attention to your upper body.
Dress with a belt. Pick a conservative belt, not one with a large or ostentatious buckle. Don’t over-tighten it and thereby show how your stomach hangs.
Are You Tall and Thin?
Just as bulky men shouldn’t wear horizontal stripes, thin men should avoid vertical stripes. Use horizontal stripes in your upper body to make you look wider across.
Once again, even as bulky men avoid color contrasts, you will stay with them. Contrasting colors help break up your body to the eye, and suggests more bulk.
Don’t go with too tight a fit, it tends to show off your thinness. In addition, a shirt that’s not tucked in will float around when you move and draw attention to your thin build.
Pick shoes with square toes, especially if you are unusually tall. Obviously, this won’t apply to athletic shoes.
Light colors suggest that you are a little heavier, so stay away from the very dark colors. White is best, but any light color helps.
Are You Short?
Your shoes should have square toes. The more pointed the toe of your shoe is, the more it makes you appear out of proportion. Taken to the extreme, you will look slightly clownish.
It is obvious, but worth stating that you should wear shoes with heels. Depending on the occasion’s dress code, you could go with boots and long trousers that reach nearly to the floor, and can cover up a high heel.
How you accessorize can help. You could sport a great tie or maybe a hat that draws attention toward your head and away from your body.
Avoid oversized prints. These demand attention and in the process emphasize your diminutive stature.
Go with low-rise trousers whenever possible. By reducing the visual size of the space from the waist to bottom of the crotch-bottom you make your upper body, as well as your legs, seem longer.
Your tie should not be wide. If it is, it can just overpower your body.
Sadly, we all have a different hand to play when we dress. Not every style or look compliments every body. Be aware of your body when you choose your clothing. Why pay good money to buy clothes that don’t work for you?
