Post Gym Polishing
October 27, 2008
If you are a regular at the local gym and don’t have to pull in your stomach each time a cool chick catches your eye, you may think you’ve got all the necessary areas covered for looking your best. However, stop and give a thought to post-gym ‘essences’ your best pal may not even have mentioned lingering on your body.
Yes, we’re talking about staying in shape and still smelling good – and looking good. Just changing out your gym kit is not enough if you want to raise your chances of being thought of as well-groomed (at all times) and don’t think that hitting the showers takes care of ridding you of the work-out ‘after-effects’ either!
According to dermatologist, Dr. Nicholas Perricone, while working out is definitely good for your skin, if you’re the kind of man who also has a passion for resistance training or strength training, this type of exercise routine releases growth hormones, lowers destructive cortisol levels and reduces stress – all welcome things. But, what many men may not be aware of is that this kind of workout means their skin is also working out: cell growth is increasing and repair and restoration of collagen fibers is essential at this point.
This is the reason why men need to pay attention to looking their best after a gym session, reducing body odour and getting their hygiene routine right so they look their best. Perfecting a changing room routine is the way to go for gym-aholics: begin by cooling off so your perspiring skin gets some relief.
The director at Elemis product and treatment development centre recommends replenishing the lost moisture from your skin (during showering, the skin’s protective lipid barrier gets removed, thus, it needs restorative measures) by first allowing the body to dry off naturally and then following up with a light aloe vera or mint or relaxing eucalyptus containing lotion. Those with sensitive skin may opt for using fragrance-free ‘seal-in’ moisturizers post workout.
It is also important to dry the feet especially well since using communal areas like showers, exercise mats etc. can lead to fungal infections, so you may want to pop in a handy foot talcum and clean socks into your gym bag for next time, besides the moisturizer!
