Online Dating Precautions

Once you register for a dating site, you will be able to search through the site members to find someone that interests you.  You can specify what types of people you want to search for, either by name, age, location, or other demographic features.

Once you find someone you like, you can send them an email expressing your interest.  Some of the sites allow you to send things called “sparks” or “kisses” without first emailing the person.

The individual can then respond back to you if they are interested.  If they don’t, you probably don’t want to pursue them anyway.  If they do respond, you know it’s OK to write them.

Online dating does allow for a semblance of anonymity.  You may find it easier to communicate with people online than in person.  However, you need to be cautious in a few matters.

Don’t allow yourself to become addicted to online dating so that it takes up the majority of your time.  Keep it real and devote a limited amount of your time to the activity so that you don’t neglect the rest of your life.

Be discreet and don’t reveal too many details about yourself before getting to know the other person well.  Don’t believe everything you read about a person either.

Some people create fake profiles to lure people their way.  If you start emailing someone you like, spend plenty of time communicating through email before arranging to meet with them.

Someone who insists on meeting you right away is not someone you want to meet. If they are willing to wait for you, they are a better candidate for your attention.

Wait at least a month before meeting.  You want to make sure this person is interested in you for the right reasons.  Meet in a very public place for your own safety.

Take someone with you if that makes you more comfortable.  Before leaving your house, let someone know where you are going and how they can reach you.
