Manage Blood Sugar Cravings
March 4, 2009
When your blood sugar is going all yo-yo and you do not keep it in control, you are going to have the commonly know symptom called ‘cravings’. So when you are in that craving mood all the time, stop and remember that you are not addressing the issue of sugar levels correctly.
When the sugar levels are consistent throughout the day you will find that you will be eating like a normal person.
Within 4 hours the blood sugar levels in the body drops if someone does not eat. This is a well-known and established fact. Hence the need for a simple cup of tea before you set off for a workout is a must (or at least something with has sugar content).
Valerie Berkowitz M.S. the nutrition director in Centre for Balanced Health says when your blood sugar is down it is the time you run to the fridge and just tank up any thing sweet. However, do be careful as fast-rising blood sugar causes the pancreas to discharge a flood of insulin.
This insulin acts in two ways, one it tries to control the levels of blood sugar and secondly it gets the body to store the excess sugar as fat. Sadly it has been found that in more than 50% the insulin over-shoots itself causing a crash in blood sugar. This comes full circle causing us to want to binge and crave food.
The best way to keep the blood sugar within control is to stay far from foods that have added sugar. Things like soda, certain fruit juices and possibly just about all baked goods.
So these should be kept at arms length. In the case of foods that are high in starch like rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and other flour based foods; well they are good for you mainly for the fibre content as well as vitamins they provide.
How ever they have to be taken with in a recommended limit. Not more than 30 to 40grams of total carbohydrates at breakfast, lunch and dinner each. Also do not go over 10 to 20 grams when snacking in between.
If you follow the simple rules you should not have problems. Eat every 3 hours. These meals should be small in portion. The idea is that you get a steady flow of essentials nutrients into your system and that your blood sugar remains at level at all times.
Try eating protein as well a tiny quantity of fat at every meal. This slows down the digestion, and prevents spiking of the blood sugar. Lastly go whole grain.
