Both national and international news television programs such as the BBC and 60 Minutes have done feature stories on the newest weight loss product to hit the market – Hoodia.
The Hoodia weight loss product comes from an extract from a cactus. While there are many different types of Hoodia plants, the plant responsible for promoting weight loss by suppressing the appetite is known as Hoodia Gordonii.
The Hoodia Gordonii plant was first discovered and used by members of the San Bushmen tribe found in the Kalahari Desert in Africa. Because this region of Africa has limited food and water resources, members of the Bushman tribe needed to find a way to be able to starve off thirst and hunger and travel for long periods without eating or drinking.

During the 1990’s, the Hoodia Gordonii plant of the Kalahari Desert was discovered. Researchers with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research performed tests on the plant and discovered that not only was it safe to eat, but it eliminated the urge to eat food.
Additional research showed that the reason the tested animals who took Hoodia Gordonii didn’t want to eat was because of a molecule found in the plant.
This molecule affects the section of the brain that reacts to glucose found in the blood after consuming a fulfilling meal. Hoodia works with the brain to convince the brain that the stomach is done eating.
The effect of Hoodia on human beings was tested in the United Kingdom. Researchers chose a group of morbidly obese people to be tested. A portion of the participants took Hoodia while the other group took a placebo.
All participants were allowed to eat the amount of food that they desired. After two weeks of testing, the group that was given the Hoodia weighed on an average at about 1,000 calories less than the group that was given the placebo.
People who look to weight loss pills for help are typically worried that the pills are not safe and have dangerous side effects. The Hoodia Gordonii Plus weight loss products have been tested and show no dangerous side effects related to its use.
Because the people taking Hoodia products are eating less food, there is a concern that they are not receiving enough nutrition from their diet. For this reason, Hoodia Gordonii Plus has added some necessary vitamins and minerals.
