Hair Loss Treatment for Men

Hair Loss Treatment for Men

Men have become very vain about their hair nowadays. They spend so much time in front of the mirror, styling their hair. This is why hair loss has now become such a big deal for men. That experiencing hair loss cannot bring themselves to just sit back and watch all their hair fall out. Fortunately there are numerous treatments available for hair loss.

Causes of Hair Loss
Hair loss and baldness
can be passed on from generation to generation. If most men in your family are bald, the chances are high that you will be bald too when you get older. Baldness is caused by a person’s sensitivity to the male sex hormone called androgen, which results in the shrinking of the hair follicles. Shrunken hair follicles are no longer capable of growing any hair at all. Hair loss in men usually begins at 20 to 30 years old. The first sign of baldness is a receding hairline, which eventually leads to a bald spot at the top of the head.

Hair Loss Prevention
There are many ways to prevent hair loss, but since it is caused by the presence of high levels of androgen, this usually requires medication. However, hair loss medications can have side effects that can affect the entire body.

Hair Loss Procedures
Aside from medications, hair loss can be treated through surgical procedures, like the flap surgery, scalp reduction and hair transplant.

Scalp Reduction
This type of hair loss surgery is advisable for those men who only have a small, but distinct, bald area of the scalp located at the top of the head.

Hair Transplant
Hair transplant is done by harvesting hair from the healthy portions of the scalp, usually located behind the head. The harvested hair is transplanted individually onto the bald areas of the scalp. A patient has to be screened to see if he qualifies for a hair transplant. The factors looked into are age, hair color and the cause of hair loss.

Flap Surgery
This type of surgery is done when the damaged hair follicles are only found in a small spot on the scalp. The procedure is done by enlarging the areas of the scalp where the hair follicles are still healthy.

Topical Solutions
Minoxidil lotion is applied to the scalp twice each day to promote hair growth. Another topical solution is the Finasteride, which stops the hair from continuing to fall out.
