A need for frequent urination in men is becoming an increasingly common problem. While, sometimes this need might just be a process of ageing, however it might also signify an underlying, far more serious problem and hence should not be ignored.
There are several causes which might have lead to the changes in your urination pattern and it is always better to discuss out your problems with a physician, before dismissing them.
Causes of frequent urination:
There are several causes of this condition but it is difficult to pin point the exact reason without a medical visit and it should not be delayed unnecessarily.
Sometimes, a frequent urination need might be accompanied by urgency as well, which might be due to an infection in the urinary tract. Because of the infection, the normal capacity of the bladder to hold the urine decreases, and hence the frequent need to go.
If the need for releasing urine is only felt in the night, it is a known condition called Nocturia. This condition might be due to a simple reason like intake of a lot of fluids before sleep or could point to a more serious problem like bladder infection, prostate cancer, diabetes etc. Normally, a person should be able to sleep for 6-8 hours but if he is constantly getting up to go to the bathroom, there might be a cause for concern.
There are also some drugs which sometimes increase the need to urinate and these are mainly diuretics. If there has been some recent medications given to you, you might check with your doctor to see if they are the culprit.
An enlargement of the prostate gland can also lead to frequent urination which usually happens as one grows older, but might be a serious problem so should be checked immediately.
Diabetes can also be the reason for your sudden increase in the urination amount. In diabetes, urine production is increased to get rid of the excess sugar and hence the need to release the excess fluids.
If there is a problem in the kidneys, it will inhibit the normal capacity of the kidneys to hold fluids and hence excess urination will occur. Kidney stones also lead to the same condition.
Sometimes there might be a very simple explanation for the increase in your bathroom trips. It might be because of the consumption of too much spicy food, increase in the amount of alcohol intake, too much consumption of caffeine products etc.
If there has been sudden change in the intake of fluids, you might check that to see if the frequency decreases. Making changes in lifestyle can provide relief, if the problem is due to your behavior, but the advisable thing to do is to immediately consult with your physician as the symptoms occur.
The main things you will need to keep in mind when going to the doctor are the times when the need occurs, any changes in diet or lifestyle, any medication or any other changes in the color and odor of the urine.
