Four Dieting Myths busted
July 1, 2009
Let us look at some dieting myths and explore if they have any merits.
Myth: Dieting is restrictive; you cannot eat foods that you like
Truth: Dieting in itself means, restricting caloric consumption and opting for healthier choices that suit the body better. A good diet allows you to eat a wide range of delectable foods – all in moderation.
However, if initial choices are greasy, butter and fat laden food, high sugar and high fat foods, yes, Dieting can seem restrictive. The idea is to have everything in moderation.
Dieting can be treated as an exercise in self control, where you relish and savor food but in smaller quantities. It also means making healthful choices in the best interests of your body.
Myth: Skipping meals hastens weight loss
Truth: There is no greater fallacy than this. It is foolish to believe that skipping meals and starving will result in weight loss. It will only result in weakness and loss of energy.
The body requires a set amount of calories to function. Skipping a meal causes a calorie deficit and only encourages the body to binge on more food. Instead have 6 small meals throughout the day is a smarter way to ward off cravings and overeating.
Myth: Diet alone will suffice, exercise is optional
Truth: This is only partially true. A good fitness program lets you balance your diet and promotes overall good health. A good workout will ensure that any calories exceeding the body’s requirement is burnt off.
Exercise helps to step up metabolism and burn excess fat. It also helps to build muscle and tone the overall appearance of the family. It promotes strength and endurance.
Myth: I follow a good “low fat” and “low sugar” diet
Truth: While it is good to follow a low fat and low sugar diet, do not be under the false assumption that it is the best for you. Make sure to read the nutritive value of food that you consume.
More often than not, there are substitutes used in low fat or low sugar food items to make up for the lost taste. This inevitably may not support your diet plan. Beware of such additives.
