March 26, 2009
Why do salads and diet ring a bell? Well they are the great favorite with a lot of people who want to drop some weight real fast. Not that I think that’s the way to do things but if you really need to drop a couple of extra pounds it’s a good way to go. Salads are full of very good quality nutrients and will provide you with plenty of fiber for your body to work on.
It is also high on the eco friendly list by the way. As some activists will tell you just how cruel it is to eat meat of any kind. Any way you really got to be into that kind of thing if you are going to follow the total vegetable path. You have in salads what is called a cold salad and as well as fresh veggies and fruit salads. Both are really good food sources if prepared with some basic guide lines or other wise they can come off as fat loaders.
Salads are high in fiber content as well as protein. They also have potent diseases fighting phytonutrients which are very good for the body. Have you tried a fresh green salad of spinach? It has over nine times the bone building vitamin K compared to iceberg lettuce. Just two cups will give you an excellent dose of lutien and zeaxanthin. Both these are very good in protecting vision.
Another great salad is a mix of broccoli and carrots. The mix is high in contributing beta-carotene. This is converted by the body into vitamin A which enhances eyesight, skin health and your immunity. A mixture of broccoli and carrots is also very good as it contains several anticancer compounds.
A mixture of fresh vegetables is considered an excellent salad. You could toss up together beets, corn, peas, artichoke hearts, green bell peppers as well as a load of tomatoes. Imagine the taste of such a salad? What about it food value? Ever tried putting together cucumbers, celery, mushrooms and zucchini into a bowl? They are good as they have high water content and fill you up quickly.
A lot of people like to dress their salads up with sauce. I strongly urge you to avoid this practice completely. If you need to, at best use a non-fat yogurt, mix into it some salt, and pepper to taste. You could add this then to your salad.
