Fatty Foods With Health Benefits
March 30, 2009
There is so much talk over which fat is good and which is bad. The bottom line really is not, which ones are good or bad, but it is really just, how much you are consuming. This is the real problem with most people. So stop fooling yourself and get a check on your fat intake. If you are going to indulge yourself with loads of fatty foods then just like anything in excess, it will have disastrous consequences. So it is not what fats you are consuming, but just how much you are eating that is going to determine all the ill effects excessive fat has on your system.
Let us take the case of beef. We have been told for a long time now that it is not good for our systems. This is far from the truth. Beef, when eaten in regulated portions, has all the benefits of good fat included. More than half of the fat found in beef is of the monounsaturated kind known as ‘oleic acid’.
This is, in fact, the very same form of fat found in olive oil. Most of the fat (saturated) in beef in reality decreases heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol (which is the bad cholesterol), or it reduces the total ratio of HDL (the good variety) cholesterol. Beef is also high in protein and provides our bodies with zinc, iron, and vitamin B. So the next time someone tells you that beef is not good for you, feel free to set the record straight.
Eggs too have been given a bad name and much scare has been put in peoples minds about the high cholesterol levels in eggs. On the contrary, eggs have more essential vitamins and minerals for each calorie as compared to almost any other food. It is one of the best sources of choline. Choline is used by the body to break down fat for energy. Also, eggs are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin which are antioxidants that help avert muscular degeneration and cataract. So, shed off the thoughts you may have had over eggs and make sure you have eggs for breakfast daily. You could try micro-waved omelets or regular boiled ones if you want to reduce the oil contents.
Lastly, please do not cut all the butter of from your diet by switching to margarine or something similar. Butter is not the problem, it how much you are consuming that is the problem. Butter is an animal fat and is high in saturated fats essential for the body to be able to absorb nutrients from the vegetables that you eat. So eat it in moderation.
