Fashion A Science For Hemant Trivedi
November 17, 2008
Not everyone would regard putting together shades and fabrics and the occasionally outlandish decorations on them before adoring them on size zero models walking the ramp as being anything close to science, but when it’s one of India’s ace fashion designers making a statement about fashion being a science, ears tend to perk up!
Of course, he’s also a firm believer of style outlasting trends and has stated clearly that life and times change, but style is eternal and inherent to individuals, which is what he strives to keep in mind when designing for a client. In a thought process similar to his, the internationally acclaimed French fashion guru, Yves St Laurent is also accredited with having said, “Fashions fade. Style is eternal.”
And so, when designer Hemant Trevedi, claims he believes in setting trends more than concentrating on following those dictated by the rest of the fraternity, lifestyle addicts listen up! He is quick to point out to those keen on figuring out what the ‘X’ factor of his garments (which are neither outlandish or exorbitantly priced, like most designer wear is expected to be, but wearable, chic and budget-extendable for those keen on some special wardrobe additions) is based on that these include clothes that are intended to make the wearer look sexy, sassy and feel special.
He further classifies fashion as 2 types: classic and trendy. While trends, according to Hemant, are fleeting ideas, he doesn’t have any particular allegiance to the funk-factor of fashion, saying though it is important, he prefers to pay homage to no particular season. Thus, though the fashion industry he is so inherently a part is stays pretty-much focussed on the media-buzz and constantly feeds it sound-bytes about their fashion predictions for the season, he refrains from doing that as he considers comfort and style as most important parameters for judging what looks good on a person, believing it to being what the person feels most at ease in!
Hemant Trivedi’s inspirations have therefore ranged from songs, architecture, to massages in music and since for him, it has been a continuous learning process, along with his karigars, to create stunning garments, he likens the effort with science, which is all about combined, exact efforts reaching a desired result.
