Effects of Ecstasy
May 25, 2009
Methylenedioxy methamphetamine, or MDMA, is more commonly known as Ecstasy. Ecstasy, is further abbreviated as E, X or XTC. Ecstasy is a drug whose use is very limited within specific fields of medical or scientific research. In most countries the drug is illegal or banned.
Street peddlers of the drug have given it very funny nicknames like Love Drug or Beans and Adam; the street name varies depending on their area of operations. Compared to most other drugs, ecstasy reacts very quickly and begins to show its effects within about half an hour. There are times where it may take longer than that.
Ecstasy is a neurotoxin. The negative effects of this psychoactive drug last much longer than the short-lived pleasures it might offer. The so-called pleasures or positive features of the drug that prompt its illegal manufacturing and distribution may include one or more of the following, depending on the user’s reaction:
• It gives the individual a feeling of decreased hostility or insecurity
• Peps-up the feeling of intimacy with others.
• Evokes a feeling of empathy towards others.
• Propmts one to talk about anxiety-provoking topics with ease.
• Lets you be at peace with self and others.
• Increases your heart rate and body temprature at times.
The harmful effects
The worst possible situation is to take more and more doses of the drug. As the effect of one dose is nearing its end, you may feel the urge to have more of the drug.
Under the influence of the drug you may harm yourself through self or external injury. For example, some have chewed on their own tongue or cheek while talking or singing; others have bumped into stationary or moving objects.
The drug often causes dizziness, short durations of memory loss or rapid eye movements that one finds dificult to control. It may cause a momentary locking of the jaws and involuntary grinding of the teeth. It may even cause blurred vision.
There is no end to the harms it may cause to any part of your body or internal organs. It causes dehydration and/or nausea, generally accompanied with vomiting.
It can cause serious damage to the liver. It contributes to vertigo and erectile dysfunction. Sometimes the hangover may last for a number of days and the sufferer may not feel hungry or thirsty. This can lead to very serious complications that would necessitate hospitalization.
