October 26, 2009
When you are experiencing pain and discomfort because of your arthritis, considering the thought of working out or exercising may not be a good idea for you.
This is especially true if you think about high intensity exercises.
However, there are low intensity exercises that you can do to work those bones out.
Pool exercises
Do your leg, arm and chest exercises under water since this will be easy for your joints. The stress will be reduced because of the water’s buoyancy. Walking while in the pool is easier and can exercise your joints. But these water exercises are not meant to build your bones.
Yoga
Yoga, meaning yoke, is meant to unite the body, the mind and the spirit. It includes slow movements and lifestyle practices that can benefit your whole being.
Hatha yoga is the yoga training that focuses on the physical aspect and the focus is on poses. A series of poses are done in this type of yoga. Other types of yoga involve meditation exercises and chanting.
With the practice of yoga, your flexibility, balance, strength and stamina improve. It also reduces feelings of anxiety, stress and pain; thereby making a person sleep better.
This kind of movement focuses on breathing exercises and can ease the pain by contracting the muscles without necessarily moving the joints.
Callanetics
This exercise works on the muscles with small and intense pulses. Every movement is exact with movements of less than one inch. With concentrated movements, this exercise stabilizes the spine and engages the pelvic floor.
Qigong
Known as an ancient health care system of the Chinese people, it incorporates postures, breathing and focus. The gentle movements of Qigong allow the building of stamina, reduction of stress, increase in vitality and improvement in the immune system. Moreover, Qigong has been noted to help in the normal function of the body’s different systems.
Tai Qi
Aimed at reducing pain, depression and fatigue, Tai Qi, is both a mental and physical exercise that involves stretching movements with visualization and breathing exercises.
The most conventional exercise, walking has been effective in improving one’s health regardless of the illness. A regular walk every day will help in your treatment.
Whichever of the above exercises you would want to engage in, it will be up to you. What is important is your desire and move to improve your condition and be healthier in the long run.
