Eating Tips
April 23, 2009
During the day, we are particular to eat a minimum of two meals – breakfast and lunch with a couple of snacks thrown in midmorning and in the evening. We top this up with supper.
We are active during the day, and are constantly hungry, because we need energy for our activity, which we get from food. But, at night when we sleep, not much energy is needed.
Nature has ordained it thus. To quote a proverb in this regard, ‘Eat your own breakfast by yourself, share your dinner with a friend, and give your supper to your enemy’
Eating a heavy meal late at night is disastrous for the body. Our bile works in the last hour of the night and first hour of the morning. Heavy food causes it to work overtime and this result in disturbed dreams and peevishness the next morning.
Carbohydrate intake during the day is broken down and utilized by our activity – both mental and physical. At night, during sleep, the voluntary muscles are close to inactive. The need for glucose is diminished. The excess glucose is converted to fat by the liver.
Late supper also disturbs sleep. This results in chronic insomnia. This worsens your health. The hypothalamus secretes hormones, which regularizes the rhythm of sleep.
A late and heavy meal causes dysfunctioning of the hypothalamus and subsequent non-release of the hormone and sleep is affected. This hormone affects other organs and glands too.
It preempts aging. After the age of 35, the release of hormones slows down. Late and heavy meals have detrimental effects on the body.
It is in the interest of ones health if food is not ingested after a particular time in the evening – say about 7 p.m. The fat reserves in the body are utilized for whatever is required after that. This contributes to the overall health of a person.
The control on eating after a particular hour helps to undo the wrong eating during the day. Sometimes when we are stressed out, we long to get home and have a good square meal, which would include pastries or ice cream and food that is rich in fat.
These foods cause deep satisfaction. It alleviates the mood. But this becomes a habit, a craving. You crave foods rich in sweet and fat, because of the affect on your body.
These foods have a disastrous affect on your body, causing the bile to work overtime, and affecting your sleep hormones and the cycle is vicious all over again.
So if you were a man given to appetite (especially in the late hours of the night) put a knife to your throat. In other words – control your eating and your timing. Do not eat after 7 p.m.
Optimists, it is said have more serotonin produced in their brains. That is why they are more exuberant and able to face troubles head on.
