Dealing With A Bad Boss
February 16, 2009
Bosses come in all sizes and shapes not to forget ‘attitude’. You may have a boss who has a thing about the font size of your emails, a bad tempered one who treats you as his personal assistance. They come in all styles. The worst is the kind who takes credit for all of your hard work but fails to pass on an inch to you. Don’t let it get at you is the thumb rule; one has to learn to work around such individuals no matter how incompetent or abusive they may be. Allowing him to get inside your head is as good as allowing bad management techniques to grind you into the ground. As difficult as it may be you will need to find some way to cut of his negative energy form affecting you.
Keeping cool is the best way out. Yes, for starters, this may seem a mountain to tall to climb, but it’s the only one that will help. Unless of course you just want to pack up and leave. Which may not be such a good idea given the fact that you can never tell what the next boss you get will turn out to be. So settle down and learn to remain calm not matter how much your inners are churning. Unless you cap that anger, it is going to spill some day and that will not be healthy for you and the situation at stake. You will be the one landing up with egg on his face.
Bad bosses sadly seldom realize they are insufferable. They are too short sighted to even consider such an eventuality. Seldom do they get very far in life let me assure you. Only team players work them selves to the really big leadership positions. A good way to make an unreasonable boss reconsider an order or directive is to be non confrontational about it while repeating it for getting crystal clear clarification. You may find when asked in such a fashion it may just kick into him how ridicules his instructions are. So you want me to find a pet lion for your daughter by 7 this evening. That should change things around we are sure.
With regards to being cool and calm, remember to keep your voice well modulated so you do not give away any unpleasantness. Refocus the direction of your conversation by keeping it down to work. Do not get distracted by any thing else. Be solution driven in finding answers to given problems and avoid personal attacks of any kind.
