Colognes To Avoid
January 12, 2009
If you thought the only colognes to avoid were the exorbitantly priced ones or those from unknown manufacturers, there’s a lot of learning you’ve got coming up in this eye-opener of an article on men’s grooming. Besides of course that expensive colognes can wear your wallet-thin and also encourage you to hoard them up for fear of using them too frequently or saving them for special occasions and then ending up finding they have gone rancid/off because most don’t have a very long shelf-life, costly men’s fragrances don’t always smell good on every one because of differing pH balances i.e. skin types of men.
Moreover, it is not always that new manufacturers in the perfume business will always sell spurious colognes as some of the well-known, branded companies have also recently been found to have used inferior quality or non-FDA approved ingredients in their colognes, which have caused serious side effects in users.
Therefore, it is prudent to check for colognes for men with special emphasis on the ingredients to avoid so that inferior synthetic compounds causing adverse side effects or reactions can be sidelined. Typically, men’s colognes containing these synthetic compounds are known to result in skin rashes, hives, allergic reactions, eczema, dermatitis and even breathing disorders.
These synthetic compounds include Benzyl alcohol and acetate, Benzaldehyde, A-pinene, Limonene, Acetone (yes, the same used in nail-polish removers), Linalool and Ethyl acetate.
However, it may not always be possible to find an Indian men’s cologne that does not contain ethyl alcohol (also known as ethanol) as it is the chief ingredient commonly used in all fragrances which keeps the oils combined and serves to deliver the base scent to the user. Legally, though, most cologne makers are free not to list ingredients, but the better ones are doing so for consumer awareness and to build trust and loyalty for their brand; it makes sense to shell out a little more, spend a little time in studying the cologne ingredients for the ones you favour and then buy fragrances that don’t contain any of the above compounds.
