Causes and Treatments of Muscle Spasm
November 9, 2009
Have you ever experienced a serious muscle spasm as an effect of a strained muscle, inflammation, dehydration or pain?
Let me present to you what triggers spasm and what should you do to treat it.
An involuntary contraction of the muscles, a spasm happens as an outcome of a tissue distress. When you lift an object or when you carry a load, you can strain your muscle.
This feeling is also true when you use a particular muscle of your body repetitively through constant, repeating motion. This is similar to the case of having carpal tunnel syndrome, wherein the inflammation on the fingers, triggers spasm and other associated pain or weakness or the muscle group’s instability.
Poor diet is one of the reasons why muscle spasms occur. Dehydration also causes leg cramps that lead to spasm. Note that those who have the cerebral palsy condition, or multiple sclerosis, tetanus, hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome or gastric reflux, can experience spasms because of their condition. If you are alcoholic and malnourished, you have the possibility of having neuropathy or having permanent damage of the brain.
Further, athletes are prone to experiencing spasm because of the over-exertion that they do in relation to their profession or interest.
Vomiting, pregnancy, use of drugs, exposure to poison and trauma may also cause spasm. Dystonia or brain deficiency can be a cause of spasm, whether primary or secondary.
When spasm occurs, the muscle tissue becomes hard and the contraction can cause an intense pain that may last for long. One thing to consider when this happens is either to be mobile or stationary, depending on the reaction of your body.
How can you treat muscle spasm?
Generally, you can get rid of spasm by getting rest, stretching, massaging the affected area or by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or medicines. These approaches will lead to relief and the strengthening of the muscles in minutes or hours.
As a usual advice, if your spasm persists and does not improve despite following any of the tips given, you can consult your doctor to better assess what truly causes the spasm and get the appropriate treatment, if another illness causes the feeling.
