Building Relations At Work

So, you’ve landed the dream job and also got the salary you negotiated so strategically for – but something seems to be missing from your professional environment. Could it be that you haven’t found the right way to build relations at work and are still feeling like the new hire despite having held your current position for over 6 months?

Whatever the reason for your not being included in general office activities (e.g. canteen sit-outs, common work discussions, brain-storming meetings or the Friday evening drink with the guys), it’s time to realize that not just your office wardrobe or qualifications for the job need to be in appropriate order for you to excel at work.

It also helps to have someone to talk to at work once you’ve established a sociable relation at work with a like-minded colleague as not all matters can be discussed with a spouse or friend besides the more comfortable atmosphere it will create, which will definitely help you apply yourself at work in an easier way. So, ask the most approachable colleague to share lunch time with you twice weekly and enquire solicitously of the new-mom in your office about her baby to show you care about others besides your position at office, too.

So, ensure you are building relations at work that last longer than the coffee break you take with a colleague by avoiding drawing negative attention to yourself by overdressing for the new position or flattering the manager, which is obviously a sign of your wanting to get an edge over the rest of the workers.

This will not be appreciated by your colleagues and possibly alienate you from them as well; so, while the occasional compliment to the supervisor is good, try giving a few sincere ones to the team members as well to balance out the Mr. Nice Guy image.
