Bodybuilding Icon Dies
October 22, 2008
The world of body-building will never be the same again. Not without Ben Weider an icon in the bodybuilding arena of sports. Ben died unexpectedly at a hospital in Montreal at the age of 85. People who knew Ben said he never looked his age at all. It is no wonder, with his physique and exercise routine.
Ben made his mark in the world of body building at an early age and went on to establish himself as an astute businessman. Among his many achievements one will find the Weider Publications that include the well-known “Men’s Fitness” magazine. Ben will forever be known for his various creations in the fitness industry. His scientific training strategies, nutrition plans and advice and the many supplements he designed and promoted for people interested in following a healthy bodybuilding routine. Ben’s nutrition plans could be customized to fit any budget and physique and were well accepted all over the globe.
The other well-known publications include; Flex. Shape, Muscle and Fitness, and Fit Pregnancy. Men’s Fitness’ parent company American Media acquired the abovementioned publications as late as 2003.
His other achievements include the International Brotherhood of Bodybuilders that was established in 1946. This organization sanctions thousands of bodybuilding championships all over the world every year and is a very popular run-up for the international bodybuilding competition Mr. Universe.
The Editor-in-Chief of Men’s Fitness magazine, Roy Johnson made a statement on behalf of all Weider’s employees he was quoted as saying,” Without Ben and his brother we simply would not be here for the myriad men who utilize us to get fitter every day. Millions of men are indebted to the Weiders.”
What many of us will not know is that Ben was the key figure behind the launch of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career in the US. It was Weider who brought Arnold to the US and to California in 1968 from Austria. Arnold emotionally acknowledges this fact.
The world of bodybuilding and health promotion has lost a leader and an icon and will be mourned by hundreds of thousands of men who were set an example by Weider a man who practiced what he preached – and showed results too.
