Anabolic Steroid Risks
June 3, 2009
Anabolic steroids have been determined to be an illegal form of drugs. The use of anabolic steroids is not tolerated in professional sports. In the past, athleteshave used anabolic steroids to increase their testosterone levels.
This in turn is responsible for increasing muscle mass and enhancing an athlete’s athletic performance. But for every upside, there is a downside. The use of anabolic steroids can greatly negatively impact a user’s fitness and long-term health.
The androgenic characteristics found in testosterone can have many negative effects on a user’s body. But most users choose to overlook these complications and attempt to remedy them by taking additional drugs.
This article lists some side effects that are commonly associated with the use of anabolic steroids.
1. One side effect that is undesirable for men is that anabolic steroids will cause their testicles to shrink. Because the body is overloaded with testosterone provided by the steroid, the body actually reduces the amount of normal testosterone produces.
Because of the body’s inability to naturally produce testosterone, a male user’s testicles will shrink. If the user stops using the testosterone enhancement steroid, their testicles will eventually grow back to an acceptable size but the regrowth process can take several months.
2. As with any drug, a user of anabolic steroids risks becoming addicted to them. While users will deny that they are addicted to steroids, the addiction has been proven both physical and mental.
When a user withdraws from using these illegal drugs they may experience a decrease in their muscle size, weakness or a decrease in their libido level.
3. Men who use anabolic steroids may notice that they are growing breasts similar to a woman. When testosterone enhancement supplements are taken, they increase the amount of tissue found in a man’s breast.
This is because the extra testosterone found in the body converts itself into estrogen, which is found in women. In most cases, if a man stops using anabolic steroids, their “breasts” will decrease in size. For some men, this does not happen and they may need to rely on surgery to decrease their breasts.
4. Anabolic steroids can increase male baldness. They can also cause additional skin problems. When the body is faced with an excessive amount of testosterone, it converts the unused testosterone into DHT.
DHT is responsible for causing hair loss in men and can increase the amount of oil in their skin.
5. Users who inject the steroids into their body may notice scarring or discoloration at the injection site, especially if they are injecting themselves incorrectly. The injected area also risks infection.
Anabolic steroids have also been linked to death. Many men choose to overlook these side effects and continue the use of steroids. If a person is looking to increase their muscle mass and performance, a healthier alternative is to use natural supplements that work to increase anabolic performance.
