Meditation

The concept of meditation and spirituality are very closely associated and inter linked to the extent that one is generally gathered to be the other as well. For most of the people both the words have a leading quality from one to another. Spirituality is supposed to invariably follow from the process of meditation. This implication is accurate to a great extent and is generally the most accepted and greatly comprehensible format of following both, the process of meditation and the path to spirituality. But meditation is not the only path to spirituality. There are various other techniques followed that can make a person lead himself on to the attainment of the goal of spirituality. So it is not so that both the words can be used synonymously.

In order to understand what spirituality really means we must delve into the concept a little more and develop a clear understanding of spirituality. The word spirituality really means an inclination towards the divine. Most of the people also understand the word as affinity for God. But does that mean that the people who are non-believers cannot be spiritual? This is the concept that needs to be defined. Spirituality has many connotations and many proclivities. It is not just an aspect of the personality; it is the essence of the personality. It has got nothing to do with one being a believer or a non-believer. It is about a person being a reflection of all that is positively divine.

Meditation is a process that involves control of the mind and focussing the thought process onto a focal point which is directed inwards. This is like developing an ability to look inwards and be able to be completely at ease with what one sees. All the humans are blessed with the ability of judging the right from the wrong. This ability is supported by the power of conscience. Every human being is blessed with the essence of consciousness which is the connectivity with the divine. It is the voice of the Supreme Consciousness.

It is generally seen that the power of conscience gets suppressed during the span of life due to various reasons. Mainly this happens because of the fast pace of life when a person loses touch with his inner self. It also happens because during the course of life one has to go through various ups and downs. There are times when one has no options but to suppress all that is truthful and beautiful and even correct. As many religions propagate the message the constant process of suppression of the conscience finally reaches a stage when the human being stops hearing the voice of conscience. This inner voice keeps a human being on the path to right and prevents him from going onto the path of wrong. This is like having an in-built guide inside every human being. But for this guide to remain operational one has to listen to its voice. This small voice is not audible to anyone but to oneself so it is also extremely easy to neglect it without any one else’s knowledge. This is a constant process and happens with everyone.

There is a flip side to this process. It is that when one continues to neglect the conscience for a very long time one keeps getting away and away from the spiritual core of the personality. This is the reality that after sometime a person moves so much farther away from the self that he stops interacting with himself. This is the most fundamental reason why the person moves away from what can most precisely be called spiritual self. This becomes the reason why spirituality declines in a person. Thus, spirituality has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with being human and this is the sole essence of humanity. So anybody who is a human being can be either spiritual or non-spiritual. Inclination or non-inclination to any religion or faith is not an issue and the belief is completely immaterial.

Meditation is a process that diverts the thought process inwards so that there is an interrogation with the self and the person is able to see himself in the real light. This invokes the true human qualities that somehow become dormant in the fast track life. The inward reflection of all the senses makes the dormant qualities come alive and a person reunites with himself. This reunion has the biggest impact on enhancing all the born and cultivated qualities of the human being. It makes him realize his true potential and then sets him to achieve it.

Thus through the meditation the spirituality gets enhanced because the practitioner gets closer to the basic human qualities that the Supreme Creator had originally blessed him with. Thus the process of meditation is very closely linked to the factor of spirituality. This is because of no other reason than the fact that when a person truly looks inwards and finds that he has more of what he cannot face there is always path of improvement which is chosen because of the voice of conscience. This automatically leads the person on the path to spirituality.
