It is one of the important parts of the ashth vidh pariksha. The examination of the mala (stools) is done in order to indicate the abnormality the dosha i.e. vata, pitta and kapha. It is important means of generating prognosis of a disease.
As per the directions given in ayurvedic texts there are many methods by which we can judge the curability of a disease. As mentioned in vata vitiation, the stools are hard and dry. In pitta vitiation the stool is yellow in texture which is foul smelling and loose in texture. In case of kapha vitiation there is the combination of all the conditions. In case of indigestion (ajirn), the stools are not well formed. In the ama state (toxin generated in the body) in the indigestion state, there is predominance of kapha. The healthy stools show sign of proper digestion and is well formed. As mentioned earlier also that in abnormality of vata in will cause hardening of stool. In pitta abnormality, they are soft and in kapha they are moderate. When there is the condition of homeostasis. Then the stools is of moderate in texture i.e. neither too hard nor too soft. Or not in liquid or semi solid in consistency. There is one point to be noted here that if the jathar Agni (digestive fire) is high then again the stool will be hard as it will burn up all the watery content present in the stool. If the jatharagni is slow then the stools will be watery as the heat will penetrate in all the pores in the stool making it of loose texture.
In case of digestive imbalance mala or the stool will of foul smell, it is cold to touch and is spitted into small pieces. In certain diseases like jalodar (ascitis), the stool may be white to shy colour and foul smells.
If the mala is extremely offensive in smell and there is presence of shine in it then it is projecting incurability sign.
If the stool is krishn (black) colour in appearance or if it very clear or (haridra) very yellow in appearance or is ati ushan (very hot) signifies evil and impedes death.
If the stool or mal is like that of honey, pus or fleshy, alkali and contains water in excess, possess different colors or is accompanied with putrefying smell then it indicates the disease in incurable.
If in case of atisaar (diarrhoea) if the fecal matter smells like that of a dead body, its colour and texture has a good smell instead of normal odor, if it is petrified or in larger quantities then it is said to be incurable.
If the mal is put into a tumbler full of the water, if it floats on it more that 10 minutes then the person is diseased with vata disorder, if the mala sinks immediately and is of slimy nature then it is kapha dominant and is ama (toxic) affected. If it splits into pieces when put into water and is of dark yellow in texture then it is affected by pitta dosha.
