Cancer is a disease that brings with itself lots of fear and painful procedures, which leave the patients disheartened and frightened. It is not possible to focus or make decisions during this crucial time. Yoga can be really helpful in these stressful times and it becomes a great stress reliever for cancer patients and helps them bring about a balance of body, mind and spirit.
How does yoga help cancer patients?
Yoga helps patients to make a strong connection with their bodies and hence, heal faster. Yoga enables to focus on the present moment and frees them of the worries of the future.
It helps to clear our minds and steady them. Yoga postures enhance the range of motion, flexibility, strength, relaxation and a sense of bodily well-being.
Yoga provides immense self-empowerment and also improves sleeping patterns.
Some useful yoga postures
Pranayam
Prana means breath and yama means control or extension. Pranayam is a yoga posture that enables you to dissolve tension. It is a combination of breath and control. You focus on inhalation, exhalation and retention of breath in pranayam.
Pranayam involves different breathing techniques like abdominal breathing, deep breathing, bellows breathing, which involves forceful abdominal exhalations and alternate nostril breathing. These can have great effects on your body and so you should do it the right way. For this you should seek the help of a qualified yoga instructor.
This is a great stress-buster and it alleviates emotional excitement and anxiety.
Meditation
Meditation helps to get our focus back on the present and relieves us from the stress and tensions of the past or the future. You can meditate on an object, a chant or mantra or you can even meditate by focusing on your own breath. It encourages you to focus on your inner self and rejuvenate your mind. It functions in a way similar to the way sleep works for the body, only that meditation works for the mind.
Dharana is the practice of concentration and Dhyana is the practice of meditation. Both of these yogas help us to focus and relieve us of any nagging thoughts.
You might want to modify the asanas like Child’s pose according to your comfort. However, they mainly work to correct the vertebral column and balance the muscular tone.
