Wrinkles on Hands

January 16, 2009

Sometimes our hands age faster than other parts of the body and look apart our appearance. This is because of sun and weather exposure, constant use of detergents and water, and years of minor scrapes and cuts. Luckily, now it is possible to renovate the hands, restoring their appearance and improving the texture and health of the skin.

Hands usually don’t get the attention and protection they really need. Generally, while applying the sunscreen, we forget to apply it on the hands, or sometimes it gets washed away or wiped off somehow. While gardening or playing golf or even riding a bike, gloves can prove to be very effective and protect them from sun and trauma.

It’s important to moisturize your hands daily in order to keep your skin supple and prevent cracking and dryness. During the winter season, regular moisturizing and wearing of gloves protect our hands from cracking and chapping. Some people have cracked hands throughout. This is called contact dermis or hand eczema. This is caused by regular work, involving constant wetting of the hands. This results in redness of the skin, and itchy hands.

Here are some solutions to have smooth and fresh hands.

•    Vitamin A, C, E and alpha hydroxyl acids are key ingredients for youthful looking hands. Look for creams that are rich with the above.

•    Tretinoin, present in restisol-A, prevents and corrects some damages caused by the sun. It also has SPF 15 sunscreen. To slow down the aging process, this cream should be used regularly year after year to have youthful and healthy hands.

•    Opt for a sunscreen which can stick to the skin and can also function like a moisturizer.

•    Freckles, age spots or liver spots, can be faded using the fading creams and can also be faded by Medlite C6 laser. These show improvement, usually in a few weeks.

•    Restylane is good for thin skin on the back of the hands. It gives quick improvement. This cream makes the veins and bones less obvious, along with youthful skin and protection against bumps and bruises. Results can be seen after 6-12 months.

However, remember that prevention is always better than a cure. Regular use of moisturizer and sunscreen keeps your hands youthful and healthy.
