Wonders of the World
April 30, 2009
Ever feel like getting out and seeing the world, but feel overwhelmed by all the choices available? There are many beautiful sites across the planet, and here is a little information that might help you make your decision.
First, you should decide what it is you most want to see: ancient, natural or modern wonders? All can be breathtaking and are worth seeing, but choosing one type may help you gain a better understanding of what you would like to visit.
If you like the idea of seeing into the past and exploring ancient locations, you should consider visiting Egypt. There’s more to see than the great pyramid of Giza, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. You can also find such incredible sights as the Catacombs of Kom al Shoqafa, which are underground burial corridors covered in paintings.
Another superb choice is China. There you’ll find the Great Wall of China, said to be the only human-made object visible from space. There are also plenty of opportunities to visit ancient temples.
Those who think natural wonders would be more fulfilling should visit Victoria Falls in Africa. Photos and descriptions can’t do justice to the awesome power of nature you will feel when you stand in front of these massive falls. Another natural wonder is the Grand Canyon. Standing there can give you insight into just how small you really are.
Animal lovers would do well to explore the Serengeti in Africa, where they may watch the natural migration of wild beasts. It’s not for the faint of heart, because you’ll come close to lions, tigers and elephants.
When compared with ancient or natural wonders, modern sights may seem to lack luster. A few, however, can still be awe inspiring, such as the Golden Gate Bridge.
Those who live in San Francisco and see it from their window every morning may not be enthralled, but seeing the bridge for the first time can be just as impressive as viewing a temple or canyon.
Mount Rushmore, the Eiffel Tower, the Gateway Arch, the Statue of Liberty and many other modern achievements of man can be amazing to see.
A visit to the Heritage Museum in Russia, with its hundreds of magnificent works of art, is unforgettable. You may also want to stop by Moscow, the capital of this huge nation, which could be considered a wonder on its own.
If none of these choices has really piqued your interest, perhaps an event would be the perfect wonder for you. Imagine yourself joining the parades of masked revelers for Carnival in Rio de Janiero or Venice.
While in Venice, you’ll also have the opportunity to see the canals, those watery roads filled with boats instead of cars. Or if you pick Brazil, you can see the massive statue of Christ the Redeemer set atop Corcovado Mountain. It is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Whatever wonder you choose, stay within your selected category. That’s the best way to get a feel for the spirit of nature, or the ingenuity of humankind from that particular time.
The success of your trip ultimately depends on you. Wherever you travel, whatever your destination may be, always try to venture off the beaten path and see more than what travel brochures suggest.
