Why Men Watch Porn
June 21, 2008
Why men watch pornography is a million dollar question. Ubiquitous, pornography is more profitable, more acceptable than ever. While, arguing about the effects on women who participate in porn videos, scant attention is given to what porn does to men?
With pornography everywhere masquerading as gentlemen’s entertainment, we seem to find it difficult to turn off the porn. A billion dollar industry in the USA, in Los Angeles alone more than 10,000 hardcore pornographic films are made, against an annual Hollywood average of just 400 movies. Not only is pornography bigger business than ever, it is also more acceptable, more fashionable, more of a statement of cool. There is a widespread sense that to suggest pornography could have an adverse effect is laughable. No one who has thought it is degrading to women, suspects that it might be degrading for everyone.
What about the millions of men who consume pornography, for whom at some point in their lives around puberty, it has held a strong appeal. This is the time boys turning into men watch porn as a part of their sex education. Long before their first sexual encounter, watching porn videos teaches them about sex, fantasising about the porn stars as they sleep.
At its most basic level, pornography answers natural human curiosity. Adolescent boys want to know what sex is about, and porn certainly demonstrates the mechanics. Men watch porn for visual stimulation, to relieve themselves when sexually frustrated. They watch it experiment and learn from the porn videos. They watch to so they can learn new techniques to satisfy their partners and not bore them with the same Ho! Hum! methods.
Psychiatrist Dr. Dayal Mirchandani explains: “When it comes to sex, men and women are wired differently. Women prefer more of fantasising, whereas men prefer visuals to arouse themselves.” So the reason why men watch porn is mainly out of curiosity, to get aroused, to experiment and learn to relieve themselves of any unmet sexual urges through masturbation.
While, some pornography now and then can be excused, even Mumbai-based Sexologist Dr. Prakash Kothari says: “Watching pornographic films is an absolutely normal behaviour.”, too much of it and its time to see a psychiatrist about you addiction to pornography! Pornography not viewed in a healthy manner can wreak havoc in a relationship. Women are insecure about their men’s porn watching habits because the porn stars chosen for their looks and figures make them feel unattractive. Their man watching porn makes women feel they are unsuccessful in meeting their sexual needs, even that it might lead their man to cheat on them. When porn becomes a fetish or an addiction then it is time to seek help. Otherwise, if you are in a relationship where one person feels offended or threatened or unhappy, then have an open conversation about how you both feel and what compromises can you reach.
