As preschoolers begin to get toilet trained they encounter difficulties controlling their bodily functions.  Bedwetting is a major problem with preschoolers that tends to last until they are about three years old. At this time they are entering a school program.  Because children have a hard time controlling their urination, they tend to wet their beds at night.

While it may be an inconvenience, it is not a serious problem.  It does however become a serious problem if the child continues to wet their bed as they grow older.  Toilet training is an arduous process for a child and it takes time, persistence, mistakes, and discipline.

There are two different kinds of bed wetting.  One occurs during the day and the other occurs at night.  Nighttime bedwetting is the most common form.  Bedwetting at night is known as enuresis and happens with forty percent of children less than three-years-old.  While there is no specific reason that preschoolers wet their beds at night there are some speculations.

The first thought is that some preschoolers wet their bed at night because their bladder is still not developed enough to contain the urine that builds up overnight.  They may experience sensations of having to go to the bathroom and act on those sensations.

If your child has not wet their bed for a while and then goes back to bedwetting, this should be of some concern.  The second thought as to why preschoolers wet their bed is that they are experiencing stress.  It is typically not linked to an illness or physical problem.

A minimum one percent of children wet their beds as a result of a physical problem or illness such as an infection in their bladder or kidneys.  You’ll need to speak to your child about what might be causing them stress.

To put a stop to bedwetting, the first step is toilet training your child.  Have your child go to the bathroom before they go to bed at night.  You may also want to limit the amount of beverages they consume prior to going to bed.  Remember, bed wetting is traumatic for the child.  Do not yell at them if they wet their beds.  It is not their fault.  Be understanding and helpful and eventually they will grow out of it.
