Many newborn and older babies get yeast infections.  While these infections are not dangerous to the child, they can be quite uncomfortable.  What causes a yeast infection in a baby? There are several situations that can lead to one.

A baby may get a yeast infection if they have diaper rash or if they sit in a wet diaper for too long.  Yeast infections may also be passed from the mother to her child when she breastfeeds or, if the mother is taking antibiotics, they can be transferred to the baby through breastfeeding.  If this occurs, the baby’s immune system becomes weak and susceptible to infections.

A baby with mouth thrush could pass the yeast infection through their body by way of their digestive system.  The yeast infection is expelled in their stool which then sits in their diaper.  Humidity can also cause a yeast infection in a baby.

If you suspect that your baby has a yeast infection, check their diaper area for signals such as red bumps or pus-filled bumps.  Their skin may also have a rash on it or appear scaly.  If your child does have a yeast infection, you need to clean the child and their infected area gently and thoroughly.  Wash their behind every time they have had a bowel movement.  Do not put a new diaper on until their skin is dry.  When putting the diaper on, make sure it is a bit loose so that air can pass through it.

There are also anti-yeast creams that can be used to treat a yeast infection in a baby.  Such anti-yeast creams include Lotrimin AF and Monistat.  These can be bought over-the-counter at the local drug store.  Make sure to follow the instructions on the packaging.  These creams usually clear up the yeast infection in a few days.

Let your child’s pediatrician know as soon as you suspect a yeast infection.  Even if the symptoms go away, take your child to their doctor.  Avoidance is the best treatment.  Try to avoid having your baby get a yeast infection by keeping their diaper area clean and dry.
