What You Must Know About Testicular Cancer

One of the greatest health problems facing American men today is testicular cancer. It is projected that 9,000 men will be diagnosed this year with the disease and, out of that number 360 will die. This should be a concern to all, especially men.
What is Testicular Cancer
This is the most common cancer among young men of ages 15 to 35, but no age group is exempted. It could be discovered accidentally or by self examination. Most cancers of the testicles begin with the germ cells that are where sperms are produced. They are of two types: seminoma cancer which accounts for 40% of testicular cancers and non-seminoma cancer.
The first type is made up of young sperm cells which grow slowly and stays relatively immobile. The second type is more aggressive and could be a combination of many cancers. The causes of this cancer are not yet known.
Symptoms of testicular cancer
The following symptoms could be those of testicular cancer. There could be a pea-sized lump in any of the testicles, an enlargement or shrinking of any of the testicles, hardness in testicles, feeling heaviness in the scrotum and a dull ache in the groin or in the lower abdomen. Others symptoms are: pain in the scrotum or testicle, and a tenderness or enlargement of the chest.
Treatment
There is not much you can do to prevent the development of cancer of the testicles. It is thus good if it is detected early because it is curable. Some treatment methods are surgery to remove the affected testicle. This is the commonest treatment. Radiation therapy is also available. This involves using radiation to kill the cancerous cells. Another treatment available is chemotherapy. This is used when the cancer has spread through the body. It must be clear that some levels of negative side effects do accompany the various treatments with chemotherapy having the most serious ones including loss of hair.
Cancer is a scaring disease that most people fear. They react in various ways to it. The best is to be bold and seek help.
