What Is Important For Family
June 30, 2008
Family - the word so often heard, but its importance so less understood! In dictionary terms, a family comprises ‘parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not’. A family can be viewed in concise as well as broad terms. An immediate family (concise) of a person comprises of his/ her parents, siblings, wife/ husband, children and grandparents.
Family is important in many ways. One can strengthen the family by providing opportunities for communications and building relationships. This can be done through enabling children to have longer conversations with parents, which can increase their linguistic abilities giving them an edge in the classroom.
Families meantime are seen as a marker for other positive family attributes and play an important role in helping teens cope with the stresses of adolescence and this can also lead to better nutrition as you have more control over quality and quantity of the family’s food choices. Spending good time enables children to adopt their parent’s attitudes to food and acceptable table manners. It is also seen that foster family traditions and help shape and give meaning to cultural heritage.
Children value the contact time. When Oprah Winfrey conducted a ‘Family Dinner Experiment’ in 1993, five families volunteered to eat dinner together every night for a month, staying at the table for a half-hour each time. At first, sharing meals was a chore for many families and the time dragged on. But, by the end of the month, the families were happy and planned to continue dining together most evenings, if not every night. The greatest surprise for parents was how much their children treasured the dependable time with their parents at the table.
It is no more hidden truth that families are where our histories are made. They have the strongest part in determining who we are. Whether it is the primary family we are born into or the secondary one that we make on marriage, it is the scene of our greatest joys, deepest sorrows, most significant milestones, most heartfelt hopes and disappointments.
Right from the birth of a child, the death of a parent, one’s marriage or that of a sibling, housewarmings, operations, festivals, birthday celebrations: these are the incidents that punctuate a life. No matter how successful or fulfilled we are on the outside, these private moments nourish us and form the center of our emotional and spiritual lives.
