What Are Skin Tags

Turns out, skin tags (medical name: acrochordon) are a common condition, basically a benign tumor, or growth of skin, on various part of the body–most commonly the eyelids, nose, cheek, neck, armpits, upper chest, and groin. More women (especially pregnant women) than men get skin tags, and skin tags increase in both genders with age, diabetes, and obesity. Skin tags are considered by dermatologists to be small tumors. However, they are benign, or harmless.
Skin tags usually appear on people as they age. They are actually quite common in people over 60, more common in women than in men. Research shows that if your Mom or Dad had them you will too. Skin tags may also develop in women after pregnancy. Skin tags usually don’t cause any serious health problems, but are unwanted for aesthetic reasons or because of the minor irritation they can cause. Getting rid of a skin tag is relatively simple, as the suggestions below show.
Skin tags are a problem because the location of the tag may be irritated by the constant rubbing of clothing or jewelry. Skin tags appear most often on the neck – inside tiny folds. Normally, skin tags grow very slowly to a specific size, up to ½ inch long (1.27 cm), and then cease growing. A tumor that appears to be a skin tag, but grows rapidly and consistently, may be another kind of tumor that is malignant and possibly cancerous. Skin tags are not a source of medical problems for most people, and they are most often painless. Skin tags are a benign condition, but can be very unsightly. Most people don’t know that a very simple treatment, there are many products readily available for skin tag removal.
However, in some instances, skin tags grow on areas of the body where they may become irritated through friction with clothing, jewelry and other materials, causing scrapes and infections. Some skin tags are located in areas that are bothersome, such as when they are attached to an eyelid, or are simply unwanted for cosmetic reasons. Such skit tags are cured using many techniques. Cryotherapy is freezing with liquid nitrogen. Surgical excision – by cutting and electrocautery is the therapy wherein a very hot but very small blade is used to cut off the skin tag while sealing the blood vessel at the same time to stop any bleeding.
