Found in the southwest of the Malaysia Peninsula where the Klang and Gombak Rivers meet is Kuala Lumpur. It is the neighbor of Singapore. Kuala Lumpur is one of the three Federal Territories of Malaysia. From its modest beginnings, Kuala Lumpur has blossomed into an industrial and commercial hub which caters to international and local tourists. The city is home to approximately sixty-six shopping centers and is the fashion mecca of Malaysia. Find out about the fun that Kuala Lumpur has to offer its guests.
Kuala Lumpur is both the capital of Malaysia as well as its largest city. It was discovered in 1857 by Chinese tin miners. It was recognized as a city in 1972. The city was originally ruled by the Selangor State Government before it received its independence as a Federal Territory in 1974. In The Parliament of Malaysia is based in Kuala Lumpur and is home to the Malaysian King himself.
In 1998, Kuala Lumpur hosted the Commonwealth Games in addition to the Formula One World Championship. It is a globally developed city. Towering high above the city’s skyline are the Petronas Twin Towers. It is also home to one of the largest telecommunication towers worldwide and the tallest tower in Southeast Asia known as the Kuala Lumpur Tower.
Kuala Lumpur gets its name from the area that it is located between the Klang and Gombak Rivers. The name Kuala Lumpur translates into muddy confluence.
Residents of Kuala Lumpur are referred to as KLites.
