Wedding cake shapes

Creative cake toppers are one way to make your wedding cake unique. Technically, there’s not very much difference between a ‘wedding’ cake and any other cake. Except that one will be photographed a lot and will probably cost a lot more than a Victoria Sponge. Nowadays any cake can be used as wedding cake; it’s entirely down to the personal choice of the bride and groom. If you aren’t interested in the plastic bride and groom dolls that you find in party stores, top your cake with one of these inspiring cake toppers instead. There are many wedding cake shapes to choose from. Most cake designs will work well on any shaped cake. If it’s easier for you, choose the design you want to decorate your cake with first and then decide on the shape. You can combine two or more shapes and have a very beautiful and unique cake.
A simple elegant white cake with white icing isn’t enough for some weddings. The Wedding Cake can easily become a central fixture at a wedding reception, the piece that people will be talking about for years to come. Often, a wedding cake will be made up of three tiers of iced fruitcake, which is thought to be inspired by the impressive spire of London’s St Bride’s Church.
With those type of cake a popular tradition still exists – that is saving the top tier for either the couple’s first wedding anniversary, or the christening of their first child. The tier is usually frozen until such a time when it is needed, but if you are planning to do this, check that the cake is suitable with your caterer before you do go ahead.
The six-sided wonder is the creative answer to a modern square cake. With such a striking appearance, you’ll want to keep the adornment clean and simple — the shape itself brings a lot to the table even without any decoration. Decorating tips include outlining each tier in buttercream pearls, accent with fresh or sugar paste green cymbidium orchids, or keep it completely free of decor, save an heirloom or flower cake topper.
Another shape that is gaining popularity is the column cake, which is basically a number of cakes of the same size stacked on top of one another and then decorated. They can be left fairly simple, decorated with flowers or, as shown here decorated with feathers, beads and wire scrolls which are all currently being used by florists in bridal bouquets.
