Wedding Attire: How to Look Good For Any Event

Dressing for a wedding can be an anxiety-provoking event. Is it a formal wedding, or a morning affair? Do we have a “theme” (heaven help us)? We are happy for our friends, and we want to dress appropriately for their day-to-remember. To add to the danger, woe betides the guest who ruins the brides wedding pictures.
To help sort through the protocol, here are a few tips when dressing for a nuptial celebration:
Suggestions for Her
First, base your selection on what time of day the wedding takes place. If the wedding is informal, and is held during the day, a knee length dress or a suit is perfect. For an informal evening wedding, a cocktail dress will fit right in. Formal evening weddings call for a dressy cocktail dress, either knee or floor length. Beading is appropriate, as are sparkling accessories.
Some Don’ts
One basic “don’t” is: don’t wear white. The bride will be wearing it as a general rule, and she get’s the color for the day. Choose the color that looks best on you and revel in it.
However there are a few exceptions…
Don’t wear black or sequins during the day, even if it is a wedding. And try to avoid wearing the same color as the bridesmaids or mothers of the bride/groom. You don’t want to be an unofficial part of the wedding party.
Wear something that shows off your great personality, not your great body. A wedding is a solemn affair and sexy clothing is out, out, out. Plus, it’s the bride’s day, right? She gets the attention. Anything too over-the-top is not just tacky, it’s an insult.
Skip the opera gloves, even at a formal wedding. Save those for a ball. If you must wear gloves, match them to your dress, and keep them gauntlet-length at most.
In General
If a wedding is formal, it will probably say so in the invitation (black or white tie). If it is not mentioned, choose a dress that suits a wedding. A floral or light pastel dress is perfect for a daytime wedding (as is a hat). A slim suit or cocktail dress in jewel colors or black is ideal for evening.
Suggestions for Him
Again, the time of day will determine the most appropriate attire for gentlemen. If it is an informal, daytime wedding, a nice shirt and slacks are appropriate with a sport coat and tie. If it is an informal evening wedding, a suit is appropriate.
And of course, formal wear for men always means a tuxedo if the event is in the evening. If you hate tuxedo’s you can get away with a dark suit. If the wedding is during the day and formal, a tuxedo is not appropriate. Instead, wear a conservatively cut dark suit and tie.
If in Doubt
Go with the dark suit and conservative tie. You will look great anywhere.
