Wardrobe Management
August 26, 2008
Life is tough trying to keep up with what dress designers create every season. How many of us can afford to change our wardrobe with every designer ramp walk or have walk in closets that can house a plane. Here are some tips on money-wise management of your wardrobe.
Solid colours should form the basis of your wardrobe. Classic blacks, white and greys are important, but navy blue and wood brown are versatile wardrobe essentials too. Create fabulous new looks by mixing and matching solids with prints, embroideries and sequins.
Layering is a clever way to wear things in many new ways. You can layer colours, fabrics, prints, textures, lengths, designers … Simple thought it sounds, on needs brilliance and flair to get it right to avoid looking like the neighbourhood bag lady.
Buy clothes that can be washed at home instead of those that need special care and dry-cleaning.
Buy wardrobe basics from good brands and designers as this is not the time to play cheap. Not only will they last longer, they will be well worth the money spent on them. So, a good pair of dark pants, well fitting white shirts, a good black dress, a flattering pencil skirt, a classic jacket, a great pair of pumps and a fabulous day bag are must haves from a commendable lineage. Stuff like trendy t-shirts, blouses, shorts, slippers, earrings, and casual bags can be from less than perfect sources.
Make a list of what you have, to avoid buying the same or similar looking items again.
Shop at discount outlets to pick up great deals.
Before buying something, always try it on first. No point going home, only to discover it doesn’t fit and the return policy says No Returns / No Exchanges.
For evening wear, you and your sisterhood can buy one expensive dress each and rotate it, so that you always have something new to wear to the parties.
Don’t underestimate vintage stuff, as fashion always goes round in circles. Dig into your mum or elder sis’s packed away suitcase for old clothes … boots, dresses, jewellery, treasures you can recycle.
