Understanding Psoriasis

Psoriasis was once considered to be a skin disorder. But now it is known that the condition which can happen in any area or part of the body, be it nails or scalp. This condition takes birth in the immune system and can appear in various forms.
It usually appears as patches that are silver and red in color. This condition happens when the cells in the skin multiply at a speed up to 10 times faster. When these cells reach the surface of the skin, they die and cause raised patches of red color covered with white scalp.
Scalping happens when the skin flakes on the top of the affected area. Psoriasis starts with small patches of flaking skin, also known as plaques. Gradually, these plaques multiply in number and enlarge.
Usually this condition runs in the family. If one member in the family is a victim of psoriasis, then the other can also fall victims to it. The main victims of psoriasis are those who have a fair complexion and are between the age group of 10 to 40 years. People with dark skin are safe from this condition. However, it is to be remembered that psoriasis is not a contagious infection. It can not spread by touching.
There are many types of psoriasis. These are: – plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, erythrodermis psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis.
Diet is an important part of our health. A proper diet can effectively manage and bring relief from psoriasis too. According to many researches, a diet rich in antioxidants, zinc, folate, copper, beta-carotene and amega-3 fatty acids, can help in the management and prevention of this condition.
Some types of food rich in the above minerals and nutrients are; fishes like salmon, mackerel and sardines as they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Sunflower and sesame seeds are also good sources of fatty acids. Tuna, trout, apricots, mangoes and fresh green vegetables help fight psoriasis as they are rich in beta carotene. Brazil nuts are good sources of selenium.
Cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and various green leafy vegetables are rich in folate. Whole grain foods and shellfish are good sources of zinc.
Besides what to eat, there are various foods which should be avoided or eaten sparingly. Dairy products and red meat should not be over eaten. Pickles, spicy food or cakes should be avoided. Canned foods, animal fat and eggs should be avoided as much as possible.
Besides these food items, alcohol and cigarettes also lead to the condition of psoriasis.
However, if diagnosed with this condition, there are several treatments that can help in fighting it.
