Accumulation of mucus and excess fluid in lungs causes chest congestion. Those suffering from chest congestion commonly experience cough, difficulty in breathing and chest pains. If chest congestion is severe, it becomes audible and you can easily hear it as crackling in the chest.

Chest congestion can be caused due to bronchitis, post-nasal drip, pneumonia, allergy and many other reasons. Though you can get prescription drugs or over-the-counter medication for treating chest congestion, it can also be treated naturally with help of home remedies. Home remedies are equally effective and they do not have any side effects. Home remedies also do not make you feel drowsy.

Simply slice an onion

Chest congestion causes extreme inconvenience and therefore, taking immediate steps to relieve it is very important. You can use simple ingredients like onions, cornmeal and cider vinegar that almost all kitchens have to treat chest congestion.  Simply slice an onion.


Make sure that the slices are very thin. Sauté the slices in cider vinegar and add cornmeal to the onion when the vinegar is clear. Take a square cloth and put all the mixture on it and then fold it over giving it a pillow like shape. Now put this pillow directly over the chest of the congested person. It may smell bad but onion fumes and vinegar will penetrate through the skin causing chest congestion to break.

You can also treat chest congestion with cardamom seeds, turmeric and honey. Boil around 4 cups of water with few cloves of cardamom seeds and 1 teaspoon turmeric powder. After the water has boiled, let it cook on simmer flame for 15 to 20 minutes. Now strain the liquid and mix 1 tablespoon of this liquid with 1 tablespoon of honey. Have this mixture at least three times a day.

apple cider vinegar

You can also prepare a herbal decongestant syrup. Mix 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of honey. Also add small amount of ground ginger and cayenne pepper. You can also mix in some water in this mixture and have a tablespoon of it at least three times a day. You can also use herbal aromatherapy to treat chest congestion. The essential oils of eucalyptus, peppermint and bergamont are combined with steam for effective relief from chest congestion.
