Top tips for improving your sleep

March 31, 2009

sleepwellGetting a good night’s sleep is very important. Without it, your day can go by slowly and cause you health problems in the long run. Sleeping well will not only give you more energy but it can improve your mood as well.
In order to fall asleep, your body temperature needs to drop. To help this happen, keep your room cool and ventilated as well. Taking a hot bath or a hot shower before going to bed can also help you to relax and fall asleep. If the weather is hot, a seasonal duvet could be just the trick. It is important to keep your body temperature cool while you are sleeping.

Darkness is also vital to getting a good night sleep. Having dark curtains will keep the light out and help you sleep better. When the time comes to get ready for bed, take your time. This will give you the opportunity to relax and unwind before settling in.

What you drink before going to bed can also affect your sleep.  You should not drink caffeine after 9p.m. and this includes coffee, tea and soda. Beware of certain medicines as well. Alcohol and cigarettes can also affect your sleeping so keep this to a minimum. You also want to avoid eating right before bed or exercising as well.

If your bed is uncomfortable you may need to invest in a new mattress or even a new pillow. You can also try ear plugs if you live in a noisy neighborhood. It should only take approximately 30 minutes to fall asleep. If you find that it takes you longer than this then try doing some deep breathing. If you find that sleep is still eluding you, get up, do something and then try again.

When taking a nap in the day time, limit it to a short nap of no longer than 20 minutes. Otherwise, you may find falling asleep in the evening to be difficult. And if you are a new mom, bring the baby to bed with you if you find that she is keeping you awake.
