Gout is a type of arthritis which is characterized by sudden pain, inflammation, swelling and tenderness in joints. Mostly, gout affects the joints of the large toes of the feet but it can occur on any other joints of the body like ankles, knees, hands and wrists. A gout attack typically lasts from 5 to 10 days and then subsides with or without medication.
Chances of reoccurrence of the attack remains high if the uric acid levels (the culprit behind gout attacks) are not kept under control. There are some natural remedies that have proved quite effective in controlling uric acid levels in body and subsequently reducing the frequency of gout attacks.
Natural Remedies for Gout
Cherries are supposed to be one of the most effective natural treatments for gout. Cherries contain a group of powerful anti-oxidants called flavnoids. Flavnoids help in reducing the uric acid levels in the blood stream. Once the uric acid levels are controlled, crystallization and deposit of uric acid in joints stops and helps in curing gout. All forms of cherries are useful in gout. Half cup of cherries eaten on daily basis can help in reducing gout and inflammation significantly. In winters when fresh cherries are not easily available cherry preserves or dry cherries can be used.
Mustard powder plaster when applied on gout affected joints helps in reducing inflammation and pain. For making the plaster, mix one cup of mustard powder or crushed mustard seed with one cup of wheat flower and add water to form a thick and smooth paste. Apply petroleum jelly on the joint first before applying the plaster. Take a handful of paste and apply on a piece of gauze. Put this gauze on the affected area and gently tie the gauze. Let it stay on the affected area overnight.
