Too Sexy for the Office
May 1, 2009
What is considered acceptable to wear to work? Even if guidelines say casual dress is ok, how casual can you go? What clothing can be worn and what should be avoided? Today we hear a lot of talk about individuality and the free mind, but how far does that go? There are limitations in the line of clothing at work that should not be crossed.
If you work for a company, you are a representative of that company, and your clothing should be appropriate. What are the guidelines when it comes to displaying your sexuality at work? If you want to express your femininity with provocative clothing, is it okay to do so in a professional setting?
Sexy clothing is an attention grabber. This is why such outfits are made. While a miniskirt or slinky top are sure to attract compliments and praise out on the streets, they may have a polar effect in a work atmosphere. Being the center of attention at work because of your provocative style of dress can also put you in an ambiguous position.
You should always maintain a professional appearance in the workplace, representing your company ideals rather than your personal point of view.
Companies generally do not forbid sexy clothing, provided your appearance does not distract or disturb your co-workers or customers. It is possible to express your sexuality while refraining from wearing provocative clothing.
Subtle accessories and an outfit that emphasizes your feminine figure will allow you to appear both sexy and professional, gaining you more compliments that you would gain from a low-cut top or stiletto heels.
A book should not be judged by its cover, nor should a person by their style of dress. Unfortunately, that’s usually not how it works in the real world, and certainly not in the professional world.
Several surveys suggest that employees that fail to dress appropriately at work are often perceived by others as not taking their responsibilities seriously.
Dating amongst co-workers is a big no-no, and dressing provocatively can be seen as an attempt to attract a date. Despite the cliché of the sexy employee being promoted to a higher position, the opposite is generally the case.
If you look unprofessional, you will be viewed as unprofessional. A promotion is more about hard work, commitment and dedication than it is about sexy skirts and a flirtatious personality.
Remember that you can feel sexy and comfortable while still maintaining a neat and professional appearance. When in doubt, stop and take a look at yourself in the mirror.
Think about the message your outfit will send to others, then ask yourself if this is the image you are trying to portray. If you’re still unsure, this is one situation where it’s better to err on the side of caution.
