Tips To Help Prevent Indigestion
November 3, 2008
Indigestion is a common condition. We all get it once in a while especially after big meals. But for some people this is so frequent that it has become a problem. It is expected that about 5 million people in America will suffer from frequent indigestion. There are a lot of things you can do to prevent indigestion.
Eat a lot of fibre every day
Most of what we eat today is made of junk food, fast foods and a lot of red meat. Most of these meals are high in fat. This can only lead to indigestion. Eating a higher amount of fibre will help prevent indigestion. It also prevents heart disease, and some other diseases. This means you have to keep your consumption of junk food low and embrace foods with high fibre contents.
Chew your food well before swallowing
Chewing is very important for digestion. It breaks down food making it possible to digest. The longer you chew your food the more enzymes your body is able to release from the salivary glands, the stomach and the small intestines. So don’t just eat the food, chew it.
Again, overeating is bad because your body must produce more enzymes to digest the food. This leads to heartburns and indigestion.
You need regular exercise
Exercise also helps the digestion process a lot. Research findings published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology journal has revealed that those who engage in a lot of physical activities are less likely to experience indigestion. The research found that there is a link between gastrointestinal problems and exercise.
Avoid stress
Stress can affect digestion negatively. This is because during stress blood flow to the abdomen is reduced to a large extent. This affects production of enzymes that aid digestion leading to a slow down of the digestive process.
Digestive enzyme supplements
There are certain enzyme supplement that could be taken to help enhance digestion and absorption of nutrient. Those men who have low amounts of digestive enzymes can take these supplements. Those with normal levels can still take them to improve nutrient absorption.
Check ups are necessary for those who have frequent indigestion as it may be a symptom of other diseases.
